Not long ago I celebrated my birthday and the special occasion made me understand that actually, I do not know what is the meaning of the day. Where did the celebration come from? We all know that the event is very important to us. Various things depend on the age celebrated on that day, e.g. legal voting, drinking alcohol, getting married, and doing some kind of a job. Even purchasing an energy drink in some places depends on this matter. So I decided to do some study on why we celebrate birthdays as a tradition.

Let's go back to ancient Egypt and find out how ancient people understood this event 3000 BC ago. The future Pharaoh was announced as god and the day of coronation was celebrated. This point can be recognized as the beginning of the ritual to mark something very significant in humans' life. Talking about ancient Romans they celebrated birthdays every year.

Greeks had other customs. Each month they marked their births on the same day. This special event was devoted only to men, not women.

In about 1918 women started to celebrate it widely also. At that time they fought for equal rights. It is obvious that in ancient Rome women had this celebration, but it was not widely spread as a tradition.

But why do we eat cakes and use candles on them? Probably the idea of such items came from ancient Greeks or Egyptians who celebrated the anniversaries of their deities. On the goddess Artemis' birthday, ancient Greeks used to offer a cake. It had the shape of the moon. Candles were placed on it. They were kindled and imitated the cozy moon-light. Artemis was the goddess of the moon and hunting, and this was the reason why they did this.

In the 18th century, this custom was added by Germans who marked their own custom called "Kinder Festa". This is the most nearby example of what we get for a modern birthday celebration.
"Kinder Festa" includes the classic meaning of celebrating a birthday by bringing a cake with a candle on it for each year until the person is alive.

Finally, this is why we all love to emphasize our special occasion - birthdays. So it means that ancient Egypt was the first place where similar feasts were celebrated. Romans liked to do it too. Greeks had offerings and cakes with candles. This is a simple and short explanation of the beginning of birthdays.

My birthday is today. Now I am 60 years old. I am an ordinary man. I spent my life in the supermarket. While I was working at the store, I used to pick up defective goods from the store, or some interesting rubbish. Whatever I collected, my main occupation was watching TV. But once I decided to end that. I decided to draw a nice painting of some persons. I don’t know why but while drawing any other person it so happens I still accidentally draw a portrait of myself. At my old age, I became more nervous and I started telling people what I thought about them. I don't know, maybe it was anger, because at school when someone was joking at me, I had to smile.
