It is known that 750 BC until 500 AD is the year of the Roman empire's existence. It was settled near the Tiber River on seven hills. At this place, Rome changed from a small village into an amazing and huge city. The major state power belonged to local citizens, other people were servants or slaves. They were a major force of labor and were used in different ways as tools. Citizens were protected by law. Not everyone could express their opinion and be heard. The right to speak was given only to Romans. When the empire expanded, thousands of war prisoners were captured, enslaved, and sold in markets as slaves.

 

How did Romans live? What was the domestic way of life there?

 

Most Romans had multi-room apartments. To avoid danger, many did not build kitchens. There were several marketplaces in Rome. Other cities had just one. The bazaar was held in the main square once a week. Food and drinks could be bought in canteens or from street sellers. In the inns, the citizens drank wine and chatted. The Romans already had a water supply: water was drawn from common wells.  Drainage pipes were laid underground. Only the rich could afford a house. The walls were decorated with drawings and the floors were decorated with tile mosaics. Wealthy Romans ate while lying on couches. They took food with their fingers and often overeate.

 

Baths and clothing

 

Roman citizens loved public baths. Steam and pools were heated by underfloor heating furnaces. In the saunas, people played, met friends. The citizen men wore tunics and wrapped a piece of cloth from above, making a toga. Women's clothing with hoods was called "stola".

 

School and games

 

Only the children of the rich attended school. Some were taught by home-employed teachers or educated slaves. The writing was studied using waxed tables and counting with wooden or clay calculators. They used Roman numerals for calculations. These numerals are presented above in data tables.
The children had to grow healthy and strong. For this reason, after school, they practiced running, wrestling, and fighting. Sometimes they rolled wheels or played with small rocks. 

 

Roman army

 

A well-trained and well-armed army conquered many lands for its empire. This is how the Roman way of life spread. Rome has a mercenary army of about 450,000 men from all empires. Each soldier belonged to "Centuria" consisting of a hundred people, led by a centurion. In the battle, the soldiers gathered around the flag bearer. As they attacked the enemies, the soldiers threw projectiles and heavy stones. The walls were demolished by rams. Roman infantry had bronze helmets, shields, armor, short swords, and long spears.

 

Entertainment

 

To celebrate a victory or public holidays, there were big matches, chariot races, gladiator fights.

Gladiators were usually slaves, criminals, or debtors. They knew how to fight bravely and die proudly. Some struggled with wild beasts. The fate of the loser was determined by the spectators, raising or lowering the thumb.
