In domestic life the area is not measured so often as weight or length. More frequently small areas are measured. For example rooms, houses, floor and so on. The major area measurement is related to agriculture, forestry, industry and in geography. So how do we measure large areas. For this purpose hectares and square kilometers are used.

Hectare is not modern unit of metric system and does not belong to International System of Units (SI). It belongs to an old fashioned metric system. The origin of "Hectare" is from Latin language and it means area. In 1795 hectare as well as the metric system of measurement was accepted by the French Revolutionary authorities.

In 1960 there were given some changes to metric system. This measurement unit was not approved by the International System of Units (SI) on a world scale. There is a possibility to use it but it is not accepted as basic unit. However it is used quite widely in spite of the fact that International Committee did not recommend it for use. Now we can exactly state, how many hectares in a sq km. It is 100 ha. It is advised to use square km instead of hectare. One kilometer is equal to 1000 meters. So one square kilometer conforms to one million square meters. The area of countries and cities are not measured using in ha. The priority of measurement in this case is sq km.

On the whole, square kilometer is much more popular than hectare. However it is up to everyone what unit of measurement to choose according to needs or situation.
