In 1960, at the XI General Conference on Weights and Measures, a new definition of the meter was adopted: a meter was defined as the length equal to 1650763.73 wavelengths in a vacuum of the radiation, which conforms to the transition between the 2P10 and the 5d5 levels of the krypton-86 atom.

The meter is reproduced in terms of light waves using the interference method, which involves the radiation emitted by the gas isotope krypton-86 (specifically its orange line) in a discharge tube. The underlying principle of this standard is as follows: in their normal state, atoms do not emit light and possess a minimal amount of energy. The principle of action of this standard is as follows. In a normal state, atoms do not emit light and have some minimal energy. Excited gas atoms emit a linear spectrum, and each line of this spectrum represents monochromatic radiation with a certain value (ν). The frequency (ν) is given by the equation:

ν = (E2 – E1) / h,

Where E2 is the energy of the level from which the transition occurs, E1 is the energy of the level to which the transition is made, and h is Planck's constant.

Spectral lines of atomic radiation typically have a complex structure known as a superfine structure. This superfine structure arises due to the presence of isotopes in natural elements. Elements with an even atomic mass and an even atomic number in the periodic table tend to emit "narrower" lines, which allows for a more precise determination of the line's peak and, consequently, a more accurate measurement of the radiation's wavelength:

λ = cT = c/ν = ch/(E2 – E1),

where c is the speed of light, and T is the oscillation period. Since the wavelength of the spectral line radiation is constant, it is used as a standard for measuring length—specifically, the meter. Spectral lines from krypton-86 atoms are distinguished using monochromators (essentially light filters), and the wavelength is measured with interferometers.

The error of reproduction of the meter, estimated by the mean square deviation of the measurement result, with the help of this standard, was significantly reduced compared to the error of the platinum-iridium prototype meter and amounted to 5E10-9. However, such an error in the age of rocket and space technology turned out to be too big for many consumers, and scientists looked for ways to create a length standard based on other principles. Consequently, scientists desired alternative methods for creating a more precise length standard.
