Spain - 2008

The economy of Spain began to develop quickly after entering the European Union in 1986. With the amounts of money from the EU, country greatly improved infrastructures, increased GDP growth, reduced the public debt to GDP ratio. During 1986-1990, countries’ economics was growing by three percent each year, what made country to be equal to other economical leaders in EU by GDP for one person. The integration into EU made a good chance for the immigrants to come into Spain. Most of them were working in the building sector, which made the biggest part of the gross domestic product. At the moment, there are 4,5 million of immigrants in Spain, who are mostly working in the infrastructure. But due to the financial crisis, which mostly influenced the building sector, the unemployment is reaching high numbers. At the moment, it is 13,9 percent, the increase in unemployment is 5,3% during last quarter. Due to the increase in the unemployment and stuck in the infrastructure, it is said, that Spain could be one of the countries, suffered from the crisis the most.
As can be seen from the table, the decrease in GDP  over one year (during 07/03-08/03) is 2,4 percent.
The interesting thing is that employees in Spain has  much more free time from job than employees in other countries.
The average of working hours for both sexes is 34,8 hours per week in the first quarter of 2008 and 35,3 in the fourth quarter of 2008. In conclusion, the economical growth in Spain is    expected to be one of the lowest in Europe, just after the United Kingdom – only 0,3% per year for 2009.  So, the country will suffer recession. The economical recovery, according to the Treasury Secretary will begin in 2010. What is more, the unemployment rate will not stabilize, because of the government program not to provide help for finding job for immigrants, unless all the Spaniards has some job.
